Out of stock | | | | | | When used on digital SLR cameras the AT-X M35 PRO DX lens gives the same angle of view as a 52mm lens. The close focusing distance of the M35 is an amazingly close 5.5 in. (14cm) yielding a macro ratio of 1:1 or life-sized reproduction with excellent sharpness. Its compact size makes it easy to carry almost everywhere and the wide f/2.8 aperture allows for easier viewing in low light situations.
The front element of the AT-X M35 PRO DX has a newly formulated WR or "Water Repellent" optical coating on the glass. This new coating makes marks such as spots left by water or finger-prints much easier to clean than standard multi-coating.
Tokina's exclusive One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the camera to focus manually. There is no second AF/MF switch on the lens for Canon, everything is accomplished by the focus ring. | | | | | |

Excellent lens for the price! Apr 02, 2010
By M. Morgan
"He who hears the shema drinks the shekar"
I was all set to buy Canon's 60mm f/2.8 macro...but I was hesitant because I really wanted something in the 30-50mm range that I could double up with as a portrait lens. I didn't even know this lens existed until I randomly stumbled upon it at POTN....and the rest, as they say, is history.
For the price, the quality of photos is excellent on my 40D. Like most macro primes, it is excellent wide-open (f/2.8).
It's a true 1:1 macro....but the short focal length means you'll have a really tough time using 1:1 in the field (without a macro flash attachment). If you are really serious about macro shots, you may want to look at a 100mm or 150mm focal length macro (giving you more space between lens and subject). But I plan to use this lens a lot as a portrait lens as well as close ups, this is not a big problem. Just understand that a 35mm macro does bring some limitations....but it's perfect for what I wanted.
If you're use to Canon ring-motor auto-focus (and every other lens I own with AF have the Canon ring motors!), then the slower focus speed will take some getting use to. The range limiter helps, and the AF/MF switch is pretty easy to engage/disengage. MF using the live view works very well.
Build is excellent. Not quite L-quality....but then what is for the price?
All and all....well done, Tokina.

Sharp, quality lens Feb 22, 2011
By John G. Strebler I've owned this lens for close to three months now and am extremely pleased with its performance.
I was looking for a prime in the normal range that would give me sharper pictures than my walk around zoom on my 40D. Canon's 35 1.4L would have fit the bill nicely, but at 5 times the price of this Tokina it was a bit out of my budget. It's hard to find reviews of this Tokina, but the ones I found were positive so I decided to take a chance.
What I like - Very solid, well-built feel - It has a lot of metal in the build and just a little heft to it. - Tack sharp, even wide open - Nice bokeh - Fairly fast - Focuses accurately - Macro capabilities
The tradeoffs - Slow focusing - if it has to hunt for focus it can take a long time to go through its full range. It does have a limiter switch you can use if you are not shooting extreme close-ups that speeds it up. - The auto/manual focus is handled with a push/pull clutch ring instead of a switch. It's easy to use, but tends to go into my camera bag set on auto and come out set on manual. I have to remember to check that it's set back to auto focus when I take it out of the bag. - Not as fast as some prime lenses with similar focal lengths
It is a versatile lens. I've been very happy with the results when using it on landscapes, portraits of my kids, and macro shots of flowers in my yard. You do have to have the lens almost right up against the subject for macro, but the results are sharp.
I was initially hesitant to buy a non-Canon lens, but am very happy with this Tokina. The image quality is superb, and the build quality surprised me.

Great "bang-for-the-buck" lens. Sep 03, 2010

Bright, light, and easy to use. Easy pull out barrel to manual focus. Macro gives the lens more uses. Picture quality is excellent. I bought the Nikon model for my D90. Most of my other lens are Nikon, but once I got this Tokina, I bought another longer 2.8 Tokina lens soon after. Tokina took some bad raps for poor quality control a while back, but they are past it, and you should take a close look at this lens if you are even a little interested. You can't go wrong with Amazon, they want you to be happy. I've had them pay return shipping more than once with no augments, and a quick refund. Don't take a month to decide, take you pictures and make up you mind in a few days and you will have no hassle I am shopping for another Tokina and I saw that this beauty had one one review on it. Since I own it, I thought it was my duty to tell you all how much I like it.

When image quality is a priority Mar 22, 2011
By 5hogun Firstly, I love this lens! The results are simply amazing. I have 6 lenses, and this is my favorite.
This is an excellent choice if you were looking to get a standard lens. It offers excellent image quality at a low price. But let us establish this lens in the context of the other comparable choices. The fact of the matter is, that when you consider all the approximately standard prime budget lenses on a crop, i.e., approximately ~30mm, you have a number of options, such as the Canon 28mm f/1.8, 28mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2 or the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and the choice at hand, the Tokina 35mm f/2.8. Each is unfortunately flawed in some way. The most common flaw is horrible edge sharpness, but other issues include slow AF, inaccurate AF, chromatic aberrations, just plain soft, high minimum aperture or combinations thereof.
Of the choices available, what tokina offers is good edge to edge sharpness, with an excellent center sharpness, at the expense of a slower AF and higher minimal aperture. That said, the AF is incredibly fast, albeit insignificantly more noisy, but most importantly, the sigma and canon options have also been known to be inaccurate, despite USM/HSM, where the tokina seems to be pretty much dead on each time, and quickly.
So the choice becomes where your priorities lie. Image quality to me is of paramount importance, and this is why I got the tokina. As with most macros, a typically conservative aperture makes this lens very sharp, even wide open. In fact, MTF results suggest it is sharper (generally border to border) at mimimum aperture than the competitors above at f/2.8, which is stopped down for its competitors. If your stopping down beyond f/2.8 with other lenses to achieve a certain quality, you wont need to for this lens, making it faster in practice than a faster lens you need to stop down with.
The image quality is comparable to my canon 60mm f/2.8 which is a massive claim for those who know the 60mm macro, and an impressive result for a lens in this price class. However, the 60mm is insignificantly sharper, and even more so at the edges, but the contrast and colours of the Tokina are absolutely amazing.
The build quality is superb, featuring a metal construction that is usually reserved for lenses well outside this price class. It's a joy to use. One reason I gave it 4/5 and not 5/5 for ease of use is an issue I have with the AF/MF switch and the focus limiter. The switch to AF/MF is a little clunky as you move the ring around the frontal barrel towards the camera for MF and away for AF. Also, while the focus limiter works excellently, it is too easy to move the switch to half way between full and limited focus, which is not a valid setting and the lens wont AF at all.
Overall, as a standard lens, it may not be the best in low light conditions, but the image quality is absolutely fantastic. Contrast, colours, sharpness and even AF are just done better than other budget options.

Great lens for crop frame video! Oct 13, 2010
By Adam This lens is a fantastic addition to a t2i for video for the following reasons: 1) 35mm (Crops to 56mm) is a fantastic focal length for most things other than landscapes. 2) The focus ring is amazingly easy it use and gives you great control when using manual focus during video (which is essential when shooting with the t2i). 3) It can focus in incredibly close. You can take a video of something 5 cm away which is really useful and very cool. 4) F 2.8 is actually really perfect for indoor lighting while still having some depth of field. 5) The bokeh is quite beautiful with an 8 blade aperture.
Not only is it great for video but it also doe stills just as well as any Canon lens.
I'm not entirely sure why I bought this lens, but I am so glad that I did. I have been working through a number of the "starter" canon lenses. The 18-55mm, 75-300mm, 17-85mm, 28-135mm, and the 50mm f1.8, and I really enjoyed them all, but this lens is something special. It fantastically outperforms the 50mm f1.8 lens in every regard but speed, and does it at a much more useful focal length.
