Maybe Leica's best wide angle lens for its rangefinder cameras? Jul 16, 2005
By John Kwok I've used the 24mm f2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH lens for nearly two years, having been impressed by its optical excellence for both nature and street photography. If I am photographing a landscape with my M rangefinder cameras, then this is the lens I reach for. But I also find it quite useful for photographing in close quarters some dynamic street photography. Without a doubt this lens is one of the finest new lenses which Leica has been slowly adding to its M rangefinder system over the past fifteen years (Its optical performance is akin to the 28mm f2 Summicron ASPH lens which I also own.); when it was introduced, it filled at last a gap between the 21mm and 28mm lenses. However, I still find that my old Contax Carl Zeiss 25mm f2.8 Distagon T* lens for the recently discontinued Contax SLR system performs nearly as well as this lens - truly a credit to Zeiss's lens designers since the Distagon dates from the mid to late 1960s. I look forward to comparing my 24mm f2.8 Elmarit-M with the recently introduced Zeiss ZM 25mm f2.8 Biogon for the new Zeiss Ikon rangefinder camera.
